Among the production of the Cantine Maschio we come across some of the most important Italian varietals.
The native grapes of Veneto have been complemented by international varietals that have found in this environment, suited to viticulture, an ideal habitat to express their features at best.
A grape variety native of Triveneto, spread over the centuries among the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and, in part, on the slopes of the Euganean hills, up to becoming the most cultivated grape variety today. This variety prefers hilly areas, even though it has also spread widely to coastal or flat areas, but fears drought and spring frosts. From these grapes comes a wine with pale straw yellow hues, dry flavours and a delicately scented bouquet. The intensity of its floral and fruity notes knows how to enchant in the sparkling and semi-sparkling versions.
It is one of the first French grape varieties that was able to win over Italian winemakers. Its plants adapt to small forms of cultivation and short pruning, reaching their best expression in cool, hilly environments and with clayey-limestone soils. Chardonnay stands out for its straw yellow colour, floral and fruity aromas, a strong body and an adequate acidity.
Cultivated mainly between Treviso and Venice, Verduzzo does not require heavy pruning and is a vigorous vine, with a good and constant yield. This wine knows how to catch the eye with greenish reflections that blend with the straw yellow, while its bouquet enchants for its delicacy. On the palate it is always pleasantly slightly bitter, with a soft and dry flavour.
The Sauvignon grape variety has become internationally widespread. Originally from Bordeaux, this ancient French varietal turns into a wine animated by the characteristic scent of boxwood bud. Its identity is completed by the straw yellow colour with greenish reflections and an intense bouquet, with notes of pepper, elderberry and – in some cases – even apricot.
Some consider it one of the noblest red grape varieties. Pinot Noir certainly remains one of the most difficult grape varieties to interpret, ever since it was exported from its native lands in Burgundy. Its name comes from the particular compact shape of its cluster, similar to a pine cone. Over the centuries, enthusiasts have let themselves be enraptured by its ruby red colour, its delicate body and its fragrant bouquet capable of evolving and elevating with ageing. Today, Pinot Noir fermented on the skin, together with Glera, becomes Prosecco DOC Rosé, bringing all its bold character into this sophisticated sparkling wine.
This grape variety is most likely a mutation of Pinot Noir. Also of French origin, Pinot Blanc has found a second home in many Italian regions: not suited to wet soils, it prefers dry climates and good exposures. Its grapes give origin to a straw-yellow wine with greenish hints, which stands out for the delicacy of its aromas and flavours.
Among the most iconic grape varieties of South Tyrol, Traminer is cultivated with the “pergola” system (bower) in areas with fairly cold climates. Its grapes are almost exclusively used for vinification, thus resulting in a straw-yellow, velvety wine with a seductive aromatic note and a typical rose bouquet.
A grape variety of French origin, coming from Burgundy, it has spread in Europe and also in Italy, becoming very trendy over time. Despite the complexity of cultivation, today there are numerous vineyards in Veneto, as well as in other regions of northern Italy. Sole grey grape variety, it is often vinified with no fermentation on the skins, mainly as still or semi-sparkling wine. More and more wineries now offer Pinot Gris also in a sparkling version.
